ABSTRACT

South Africa is famous for its abundance of mineral resources; and mining forms a significant part of the economy. While most other mining countries have similar large open pits and underground mines for massive orebodies, South Africa’s narrow-reef tabular gold and platinum mines are unique. Similarly, the development and support of smaller-dimension access tunnels using hand-held pneumatic jackhammers is not widely practiced in mining. This chapter focuses on the support of these tunnels.
