ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION It has long been recogn ized that the primary determinant of the actiVIty of the renin-angiotensin system is the rate at which renin is secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidney. Because of this recognition, the mechani ms that regulate renin secretion have been the subject of intensive research for several decade . Vander ( 1967) summarized much of the early research in this area in 1967 in a cia ic review. He reviewed the evidence that renin secretion i controlled by both intrarenal (renal baroreceptor, macula densa) and extrarenal (sympathetic nervous system, angioten in II [Ang II] feedback) mechanisms and propo ed that these normally operate in an additive or ynergistic manner.
