ABSTRACT

A woman whose husband had advanced prostate cancer came to see me. She mentioned, in the course of the consultation, that she was afraid that her husband was being ‘ripped off’ by a charlatan. He had exhausted conventional treatments and was now paying a lot of money for a special cancer medicine that was being sent to him in the post. Did I think that sounded right? She had expressed her concern to her husband, but he had become quite angry and said that she was only objecting to the treatment because of the cost. ‘You’re worried that I’ll spend all our money before I die.’ That was, in truth, a key concern, assuming that the ‘special medicine’ was indeed a scam.
