ABSTRACT

In the healthcare sector, there has been a push for the use of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and evidence-based practice (EBP). EBM and EBP integrate the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to facilitate clinical decisionmaking.1 Clinicians are required to provide the best standard of care to patients and their families that is based on the most current, best-quality research evidence available. Yet, many healthcare academic and clinical educators do not apply the same principle of best practice strategies and pedagogical approaches in the education of healthcare students.2-5 While EBM and EBP are central to health professionals’ clinical practice and the patient care they provide, it appears clear that there is a general lack of consideration given to evidence-based education (EBE). Th is point is illustrated by Boet et al.,6(p160) who state that

numerous educational stakeholders have advocated for the movement from opinion-based to evidence-based education whereby educational curricula are based on research fi ndings rather than historical and culturally engrained traditions.
