ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Getting started with evidence based education (EBE) can be diffi cult, especially for researchers or teachers who have not looked at education-focused academic literature before. Sometimes a new vocabulary is needed in order to fi nd and read articles, and databases or journals that target education-focused literature might be diff erent to those a student is more familiar with using. It is important to follow a systematic process, and to make appropriate and smart selections about tools, scopes, terminology and methodology throughout the process. Just like with anything else, you should start small and fi nd your way around the process, developing the necessary skills, before taking on a full-scale systematic review (please refer to the glossary at the end of this chapter for defi nitions of diff erent review types). EBE involves a number of steps that are outlined in Figure 5.1. Steps 1 through 4 will be covered in detail in this chapter.
