ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Evidence-based practice has been widely advocated and taught in the disciplines of nursing and midwifery for many years. Nurses and midwives have engaged in diverse research aimed at improving patient care and prevention of illness, as well as educationally focused research around teaching and learning in the two disciplines. Yet, evidence to support teaching and learning varies in quality and scope.1 Th is chapter argues that internationally educators have engaged in extensive research around education in nursing and midwifery. Despite this, there is still a need for rigorous research that seeks to evaluate the eff ectiveness of teaching and learning interventions and further informs evidence-based education, in particular with relation to curricula and teaching and learning methodologies.
