ABSTRACT

“So the eternal city is eternal by means of its eternal relevance—its constant and dynamic relevance—ever changing—as each generation of artists perceives and learns from the variety and richness of this city in different ways. There’s no place like Rome.” (Venturi 1996: 48–49)

The paper addresses strategies used in a study abroad program to illustrate tectonics through historical precedents. The relevance of study abroad programs is in the act of immersion via site visits, that is, to be present in the past. This experience can be a critical factor in shaping a young architects’ design thinking as memorable imagery of places and spaces are assimilated and recollected in later architectural production.
