ABSTRACT

This paper presents an analysis of the energy consumption of the case study houses in Ireland, where the measured and simulated building energy performance is compared using BIM. The effect of behaviour patterns of the building occupants on performance is discussed. Two Building Information Models (BIMs) have been developed using the Autodesk Revit software, exported via green building extensible markup language (gbxml) to Design Builder software and simulated using the EnergyPlus (V8.1.009 DOE2) simulation engine. The main findings of the paper are (1) the significant difference between recorded energy usage and building energy simulation results, which may be primarily due to factors such as thermal bridging, air-infiltration, heat loss, deterioration of building elements, and (2) behaviour of occupants and its dissimilar pattern, which causes a remarkable variance in the energy consumption of the houses, irrespective of which year they were built in.
