ABSTRACT

In a private 5 storey building in Athens the architects ‘TDC Tsigos Design & Construction’ had the idea to cover the facades with a set of parallel stone panels. These panels have curved contours and their surface continuously decreases from the innermost to the outermost panel from the building façade. Thus, the impression of an earthly terrain, projected onto a vertical plane is created. It is evident that a non-conventional supporting structure, different from the conventional ones for cladding should be designed. The building under discussion is located at the limit of the permissible building area on Lycabettus hill, at 1 Kleomenous street, in the central area of the city of Athens (see Photo 1). The design of this non-conventional supporting structure is the subject of this paper.
