ABSTRACT

The relation between architecture and structure has different degrees of interdependence, according to the specificity of each building. There may be situations where the structural solution is more evident and others where it plays a secondary role in the architectural design. Brazil has two museums designed in the 1950s, where the architectural environment is inseparable from the structural solution. These are the Museum of Modern Art – Museu de Arte Moderna, MAM – in Rio de Janeiro, where the responsible architect was Affonso Eduardo Reidy in 1953; and the Art Museum of São Paulo – Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MASP – designed by architect Lina Bo Bardi in 1958. Architecture is inseparable from the structure in these two architectural ensembles. This paper propose a comparative analysis between them, considering the mutual dependency between architectural design and structure solution in both of these brazilian museums.
