ABSTRACT

Throughout history a number of well-known collaborations between some of the best architects and structural engineers in the world have taken place. From the beginning of the nineteenth century – the time of the genesis of this partnership – to the present day, the nature of this relationship has evolved over the time, becoming more and more significant of late given the increasingly important role of structure in iconic buildings during the digital era. This paper focuses on the study of some of the most well-known successes in the history of this relationship, such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, but also on some other cases, such as the Sydney Opera House, in which understanding between architects and structural engineers was not so easy.
