ABSTRACT

The use of structural steel has changed significantly in the last half century. It has evolved from a material that was normally hidden from view, to one that has become the expression of the architecture. Much has changed since the overt architectural use of steel appeared in the High Tech period. The introduction of tubular steel, BIM, and advanced methods of steel fabrication have impacted the process. The normalization and widespread adoption of this practice has resulted in Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS). This paper will focus on innovations in the design and detailing of expressed steel system through a discussion of relevant projects, applications and details.
