ABSTRACT

How can we ensure quality in construction and tectonic language, beauty and use in contemporary architecture? Some contemporary architecture is to be conceived only for the preference of the eyes. Several of the superficial big-scale projects are detached from its context and lack the presence of senses and human scale. It seems that the quest for newness and uniqueness looks to result in a tapestry of repetition and boredom. Newness is often just a formal surface without tectonic understanding of the concept. Is it due to the shorter and digital design process nowadays? And will the world’s limited resources and the increasing demands for comfort influence the quality of architecture in the future?

This paper will outline the intrusive issues of contemporary architecture and point out architectural quality not only in terms of materials, construction, beauty and detailing but also function and sustainability.
