ABSTRACT

In 2000, the University of Kansas School of Nursing (KU-SON), in partnership with an EHR software supplier, adapted their EHR solution to fi t the learning and teaching workfl ows of baccalaureate nursing students and faculty. Over the ensuing decade, this innovative program, titled Simulated E-Health Delivery System (SEEDS), has been rigorously developed and extended into all facets of undergraduate and graduate nursing, nursing informatics, medical school, and health information management. While we have long reported on our work at numerous national and international conferences and have published widely,1-8 this chapter, an update to our chapter in the fi rst edition,1 focuses on our work to merge this EHR technology with laboratory simulations to provide students with virtual clinical experiences that closely mimic the electronic clinical environments of today’s practice workplaces We also provide a detailed outline of techniques for designing and implementing case studies in the system and discuss the curriculum implications and technology challenges of using a solution designed for clinical care delivery as an educational application.
