ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: A linear extended single-track model (ESTM) in which the roll motion is also considered is derived for car-trailer combinations. The dynamic coupling between the roll motion and the yaw motion is considered by the integration of the roll steering coefficients. The dampers in the suspension of the towing car have significant influences on the vcrit . The change of the vcrit from a hard damper setup to a soft damper setup can be slight or significant in the ESTM with different roll steering coefficients. The deviation between the CarMaker® simulation model and the experimental system cannot be easily explained unless the roll steering coefficients included in the ESTM can be determined from the physical perspective. Besides, a harmonic dynamic axle load, resulting from a potential damping failure phenomenon, is also investigated and has been proved to be able to induce a change of ca. 10 km/h in the vcrit .
