ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The chatter phenomenon of road racing motorcycles consists of self-excited vertical oscillations of both the front and rear unsprung masses. Even though in recent years this problem has been studied by several authors, its causing factors are still not clear. In the present study three different motorcycle models of increasing complexity are considered, from planar to threedimensional multibody, in order to investigate the possible driving mechanism generating this self-excited vibration, and consequently to identify which of the model features may play a role in the actual vibration onset.
