ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to present an integration of two control strategies in the area of vehicle control. In this work Electronic Stability Controller (ESC) is integrated with Active Tilting System (ATS) with the aim to improve vehicle safety, lateral stability, handling capability and ride comfort. By using this integration ESC improves lateral stability by using active breaking system, while ATS improves ride comfort and handling capability by tilting against the direction of centrifugal force in cornering to reduce lateral force acting on the passenger and increasing road holding capability of each tire using equal force distribution on each tire. Especially the lateral safety can be improved more than before by reducing side-slip angle during cornering. From mathematical simulation results it can be shown that ESC combined with ATS improves safety, ride comfort, lateral stability and handling capability simultaneously. In this paper different results showing performance of ESC with passive system, ESC combined with ATS and only ATS using 14 degree of freedom (DOF) nonlinear car model are presented and discussed.
