ABSTRACT

Nursing informatics (NI) is the driving force for the evolution of healthcare today in the United States. This is propelled by the increasing use of health IT. The Institute of Medicine’s report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, acknowledged technology as a major contributor to increased patient safety and efficient and cost-effective care, and made profound recommendations for nurses to take a leadership role in transforming healthcare.1 Clinical transformation will be based on technological advances that will require nurse informaticists to possess knowledge that was historically uncommon.
