ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on knowledge translation and health information technology. It describes the interventions and actions that are most likely to improve and speed the flow of research evidence into practice and how informatics applications can enhance the likelihood that patients and their families obtain the best care possible. Health information technology (HIT) has the potential to enable a dramatic transformation in the delivery of healthcare, making it safer, more effective, and more efficient. Some organizations have already realized major gains through the implementation of multifunctional, interoperable HIT systems built around an Electronic Health Record. Knowledge translation in the domain of healthcare deals with changing the behaviorof individual clinicians and how clinics, hospitals, cities, municipalities, states and provinces, and even countries respond to the challenge of making health decisions based on evidence in a cyclical, ongoing manner so that care provided is the best currently available.
