ABSTRACT

Strawberries are one of the most delicious and fragrantly sweet-flavoured fruits (Sharma and Sharma, 2004). It is believed that various types of straw that were used traditionally as mulch to suppress weeds in field and keep the berries (fruits) free from contamination of soil gave rise to the name “strawberry”. However, some are of the opinion that the straw-like appearance of the runners led to its current English name (Pritts and Handley, 1998). However, according to Buczacki (1994), “the name strawberry does not seem to have anything to do with the practice of putting straw mulch around the plants”.
