ABSTRACT

When Botulinum toxin is injected into muscles, it temporarily weakens them by blocking communication between the nerves and muscles. As a result of the injection, muscles become weaker and less stiff. This may help with problems caused by overactive muscles in some neurological conditions. Botulinum toxin usually takes about 2–5 days to begin to work and usually reaches its peak around 10–14 days later. Some muscles and some people respond faster than others. However, the benefit on our symptoms may last much longer than this, because the botulinum treatment is combined with other treatments, such as physiotherapy and/or splinting. In some situations, the treatment can cause a temporary reduction in our level of function. If people are at all concerned about side effects after the injection, please contact our general practitioner.
