ABSTRACT
The refill procedure involves a specific set of tasks that must be followed precisely to ensure the individual’s safety. It is imperative that aseptic techniques be followed throughout the procedure in order to maintain sterility of the pump reservoir, fluid pathway and device pocket. Injection of the drug during the refill procedure must be through the centre reservoir fill port. Improper injection through the side catheter access port or into the pump pocket may result in a clinically significant or fatal drug overdose. The needles in the refill kit should not pass through the side catheter access port unless excessively forced. It is therefore recommended to use the needles, templates and other accessories provided with the manufacturer’s refill kit to prevent any incorrect injections and subsequent adverse events.
