ABSTRACT
WHAT IS BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE? Business intelligence (BI) is a term that is used regularly in the healthcare industry. Most pundits assert that it is vital for eectively managing today’s complex healthcare environment. However, many people have a hard time dening what BI is and certainly cannot recall its key elements. is chapter will present a simple overview of BI, starting with dening the term and moving on to reviewing key elements and a simple strategy for using BI. Once the reader has a basic framework for understanding this key element, the chapter will delve into the merging of clinical data into BI. Finally, we discuss some advanced topics on BI. Know that this chapter only skims the surface of the topic; there are multiple referenced resources the reader should review if a deeper understanding is desired.
