ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a beginner’s lesson on how to use Unreal Engine to rapidly prototype a simple scene for use in virtual reality (VR). The chapter’s primary goal is to provide a “bare bones” recipe for converting a real-world scenario into a VR-based virtual world, and to do so without requiring any coding, scripting, or 2D or 3D art asset creation. The chapter also lightly touches upon some design decisions but is primarily a step-by-step implementer’s guide designed to help new users gain a functional familiarity with the Unreal Engine and with it, the ability to rapidly prototype VR environments without being dependent upon complementary development skill sets such as programming and digital asset design.
