ABSTRACT

The basic needs for plants are sunlight, soil with sufficient nutrients, and water. Bioenergy can be obtained from feedstock of plants, forest, primary mill residues, secondary mill residues, and urban wood waste; methane from landfills, wastewater treatment, and biogas; and biodiesel from oil crops and waste. The basic parts of a plant are the leaves, root system, stalk, and seeds. There are many types of plants used for bioenergy. Cereal crops are annuals planted from seed where the perennials are grasses and wood, which can be propagated from seeds or rhizomes. From these type plants the entire plant is used for the mass, instead of just the seeds like in corn ethanol, or leaving the best part of a plant in the field. In the tropics planting and harvesting of crops is primarily driven by the rainy season. Corn is the major crop in terms of hectares planted and in economic value, with around 20% exported to other countries.
