ABSTRACT

Many health professionals understand the importance of providing information to adult patients and involving them in decision-making about their treatment. However, the involvement of children and young people in their own healthcare has been altogether more contentious. As outlined in the first chapter, it has been recognised only relatively recently that children have multifaceted needs in a health context. Yet, despite significant improvements in children’s services, it would appear that not all health professionals routinely involve children in their healthcare generally, or in healthcare consultations specifically. 1
