ABSTRACT
Protecting children who are being harmed by adults is one of the greatest challenges facing professionals who work with children. Detecting that abuse is happening requires expertise in communication and judgement in deciding how to respond. The skills of listening to children, to hear their voices, are necessary to make the initial diagnosis. Effective action demands good verbal and written communication with colleagues particularly, as there are many obstacles to the exchange of high-quality information.
