ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces measurements that are associated with important aspects of healthcare processes. It demonstrates measurement of specific aspects of a process: its structure, its understanding by stakeholders, its performance and its conformance. The chapter describes connections between these different aspects of measurement. One of the classic metrics is the information flow metric that is based on the data flow between different modules of a program or between the activities of a process. It is important to recognize that understanding a process model requires two orthogonal knowledge components: modeling knowledge and domain knowledge. The conformance of a process to a prescribed way of execution is an important concern in the healthcare domain. The structural complexity of a healthcare process can be a reason for making it difficult to understand by different stakeholders. The chapter examines how the performance of a process can be measured based on the devil's quadrangle.
