ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses of some fire tests on walls and columns carried out in Germany and applies the rules of EN 15080-12 for a classification according to EN 13501-2. Eurocode 6 - EN 1996-1-2 gives proposals for the fire classification of masonry walls. As the database for a European assessment is rather limited, the values in EN 1996-1-2 are given only in a note so that every member state is free to choose its own values, depending on the available national technical experience. EN 15080-12 allows the application of fire test results for masonry with general purpose mortar for comparable walls with thin layer mortar. It would therefore be logical to apply the classification for masonry with general purpose mortar to masonry with thin layer mortar, especially when, as in the case of clay unit masonry, EN 1996-1-2 proposes the same range of values for both types of mortar.
