ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the most important aspects of the advanced numerical approach together with selected comparisons with experimental measurements. It examines an alternative relatively simple numerical approach is also presented that makes use of the diagonal strut concept. Masonry infill panels within multi-story Reinforced Concrete (R/C) framed structures were damaged to a considerable extend during strong earthquake activity. An advanced non-linear 2-D numerical simulation is first presented that can realistically capture the in-plane hysteretic behaviour of R/C frames with masonry infills. The interaction of the masonry infills and the surrounding frame has been a subject of research for quite some time. The validity of the numerical simulation of the plastic hinges at the ends of the R/C beams and at the top and bottom of the R/C columns was also checked. The chapter explains a simplification of the numerical simulation of the masonry infill frame response for a single-bay one story infilled frame.
