ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the principles behind the proposed system and the characteristics of the construction details and materials, along with the available results of the mechanical characterization on the masonry. It deals with the first phase of the research, on the principles and on the structural concepts of the system and on the type and characterization of the materials, underlining the innovative aspects that distinguish the solution as respect to traditional infills and other modern novel systems. The seismic behaviour of masonry infills and their interaction with Reinforced Concrete structures has been subjected to several numerical and experimental studies and researches. The most worrying aspect is that the critical issues have manifested not only in historical buildings but also in recent new ones, exhibiting an inadequate seismic behaviour, often attributable to the intrinsic vulnerability of masonry panels subjected to seismic action.
