ABSTRACT

In order to understand seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry walls, a finite element model was established for a wall with opening under lateral load, and it was verified by comparing the calculated and testing results. This chapter considers finite element analysis for unreinforced masonry walls with openings under lateral loads was conducted in which the parameters such as the loading directions, the pier aspect ratio, spandrel depth, distance between opening and edge. For the purpose of the verification by using the existing testing results, finite element model for a reinforced masonry wall was proposed. The finite element models were formed by the mapped mesh method with the grid size of 120 mm. It is obvious that the aspect ratio of the wall is a significant factor when lateral load is applied from the wide pier to the narrow one.
