ABSTRACT

This chapter describes improvement, resulting from training, that has doubled productivity. It looks at the construction requirements necessary to improve productivity. The chapter explores thin layer mortar (TLM) joint making simplification opened the possibility of increasing the block size. Concrete Block Masonry is by far the most common wall construction system in Costa Rica, accounting for more than 75% of wall construction. The resulting new masonry system changes traditional masonry practices by increasing block dimensions, following a complete modular coordination approach, introducing TLM to the country and changing the laying process. The weight of the block/element has to be carried by the fresh mortar applied on a small concrete surface. TLM develops early strength making the building site safe. This feature allows for the possibility to put up walls to floor level in one shift standing unprotected in heavy rainfall.
