ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to cover the earthquake behaviour of Basilica type churches typical in Greece. Numerous churches in the island of Kefalonia have the structural form of the single aisle basilica with an elongated rectangular shape. The eigen-modes and eigen-periods of two churches are investigated next in a parametric way, assuming linear elastic behaviour of all the elements of the superstructure as well as the foundation links. These churches are the ones mentioned before the Panagia of Roggoi and St. Marina in Soullaroi. These are among the oldest Christian churches in Kefalonia island that developed severe damage during the earthquake. The predicted performance of the Christian churches, employing demands from a linear dynamic analysis that utilizes the horizontal seismic force levels and assumed strength values for stone masonry, yield good agreement with the observed performance.
