ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the new method for solid unreinforced veneer walls. For the determination of the spacing of movement joints no uniform design rules exist. That's the reason why a large variety of prescriptive rules are adopted in standards concerning execution of masonry. The chapter deals with unreinforced masonry veneer walls without openings. The proposed method is based on the assumption that small cracks are acceptable as long as the units don't crack. Moreover, the guidelines take into account the mechanical properties of the units and mortar as well as the execution method of the masonry. Validation of the method is based on observations in practice. Since no uniform design rules are available most standards and guidelines for masonry structures adopt prescriptive rules. These rules of thumb are not based on scientific research but are inspired by specific situations where cracks occurred.
