ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a survey of national green building programs in the USA, including information on the history, use, organization and content of LEED, AsHRAE 189.1, Green Globes, International Green Construction Code (IGCC), National Green Building Standard, and the Living Building Challenge. Green Globes is an online commercial building rating system based on a standard developed by the Green Building Initiative. The Green Globes assessment online survey is divided into seven sections: project management; site; energy; water; materials and resources; emissions, effluents, and pollution reduction; and indoor environment. The IGCC is a model green building code intended as an overlay code used in conjunction with the other model building codes developed by the International Code Council. Buildings that are durable use material resources to their full potential. Most green building programs do not promote design for durability.
