ABSTRACT

The Villa d'Este Palace in Tivoli is a renowned historical site, because of its magnificent gardens. It is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. This chapter deals with some issues related to the preservation of architectural and artistic assets of the Palace. Structural and seismic assessment plays a primary role in the preservation of architectural heritage in Countries, such as Italy, characterized by high seismic hazard. In fact, the large number of uncertainties affecting material properties and structural details prevent the setting of reliable structural models and the implementation of accurate analyses. Before the construction of Villa d'Este, the site also hosted a monastery, whose remains were recovered during the excavations carried out in the context of the recent restoration of the Palace. Significant restoration interventions were needed right after the Second World War to repair the severe damage that affected the building, including the reconstruction of the North-East side of the building that collapsed during the War.
