ABSTRACT

Osteoimmunology is a research field that investigates interactions between the bone and immune system. In the light of this new discipline, osteoporosis is actually considered a chronic age-related immune-mediated disease. Bone and immune cells are strictly interconnected through a complex network of receptor pathways and cytokines, which in the whole constitute the immunoskeletal interface. Moreover, the crosstalk between immune and bone cells is also involved in the regulation of important body functions beyond bone remodeling and takes part in various pathological conditions sharing an inflammatory background.
