ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a numerical reservoir simulation and modeling of a comprehensive CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project, including the application, utility, and important contributions of data-driven analytics in projects involving CO2-EOR. It includes a geologic and operational description of the CO2-EOR project in West Texas, followed by the development and analyses of the numerical simulation and modeling for the project and then the incorporation of smart proxy modeling, which maximizes the utility of the numerical modeling study. The numerical reservoir simulation model is the subject of the smart proxy model as an implementation of data-driven analytics in Carbon dioxidestorage problems. The chapter details the development and then the results associated with the development and deployment of smart proxy modeling for CO2 storage in geological formations. Surrogate reservoir models (SRMs) are categorized as smart proxy models. SRMs are approximations of the full-field 3-D numerical reservoir models that are capable of accurately mimicking the behavior of the full-field models.
