ABSTRACT

Bioprinting has seen spectacular progress in recent years, as can be judged by the steadily increasing number of publications and professional meetings devoted to the topic or by the number of google-search entries on the subject. Numerous reviews have been devoted lately to the general overview of the field (Arslan-Yildiz et al., 2016; Cui et al., 2017; Ferris et al., 2013; Li et al., 2016; Ozbolat et al., 2016; Pati et al., 2016; Seol et al., 2014; Skardal and Atala, 2015) or its applications in many specialized domains (Albritton and Miller, 2017; Datta et al., 2017; Di Bella et al., 2015; Dias et al., 2014; Duan, 2017; Hoch et al., 2014; Irvine and Venkatraman, 2016; Jana and Lerman, 2015; Knowlton et al., 2015; Ng et al., 2016; Tasoglu and Demirci, 2013; Vijayavenkataraman et al., 2016; Visscher et al., 2016; Zhang et al., 2016), as discussed in the present volume also. With the appearance of commercial entities (e.g., Organovo [www.organovo.com], Cyfuse [https://www.cyfusebio.com/en/], Poietis [https://poietis.com]), the field has matured beyond basic academic research.
