ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the ways in which rehabilitation engineering (RE) has been applied to address the needs of persons with disabilities in LRS as well as the challenges and opportunities seen in these environments. Since the mid-1900s AT has grown with major contributions from a relatively small group of international non-governmental organizations working toward provision of wheelchairs and prosthetics and orthotics. The International Society of Wheelchair Professionals was launched in February 2015 in order to serve as a global resource for wheelchair service standards and provision through advocacy, education, standards, evidence-based practice, innovation, and a platform for information exchange. While RE activities in LRS have obvious limitations compared to working with more resources, it is often the limitations and constraints that lead to the most innovative solutions. Plywood is often available but can be poor quality and cost prohibitive for local production of AT.
