ABSTRACT

The Rehabilitation Engineering Association of North America has multiple published standards on wheelchair transportation safety and methods to test wheelchairs and related components when used as seats in automobiles. Similar to securement options in automobiles, the four-point tiedown system is the most common method of wheeled mobility device securement systems on transit buses. Staffed desks are most prevalent at transit stations and mass transportation terminals due to the concentration of travelers and increased demand for the customer service. The chapter discusses the mirror findings from Giampapa et al, which reviewed and assessed the potential for current technology research efforts to enhance accessible transportation in the reasonable future. Autonomous urban driving would dramatically increase access to spontaneous travel by people who cannot drive and create new options in regions poorly served by transit, and paratransit, or other forms of mass transportation.
