ABSTRACT

The black and white flow chart starts from the top with a box on the left side titled “CAUSES” in capital letters. Underneath this title in lowercase letters are the causes for an impairment, which are disease, injury, or genetic difference. The inability to access is further described in lowercase letters as the inability to use standard product(s) as they are designed due to mismatch between abilities and requirements of the products. The first approach, changing the individual, is based on a medical model and is a very important strategy. It seeks to increase the basic abilities of the individual through both medical and other rehabilitation strategies. It may include surgery and rehabilitation therapy, but also includes training, the learning of techniques from peers, and in many cases, equipping the individual with personal assistive technologies such as glasses, hearing aids, prostheses, splints, and wheelchairs.
