ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the relevant information on a range of cognitive disabilities along with an overview of where we are today in our development and application of technologies to facilitate independence. The illustration title, “The Brain by Jackson Mohsenin,” is present in the upper left corner of the illustration. A green ribbon connects the part of the brain to the label up and to the right that reads “Occipital Lobe.” Brain disorders due to traumatic injuries can result from a single major head trauma or from a repeated series of head injuries, such as those sustained by football players. The degree and nature of cognitive impairment due to head trauma depend on the location and severity of the injury. Some cognitive impairments are inherited. People with this syndrome often have intellectual functioning that is significantly below average, combined with an impaired ability to adapt to the demands of everyday functioning.
