ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the conceptual underpinnings of AT development, research, services and education. Assistive technology can be broadly defined as including a range of “devices, services, strategies, and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate the problems faced by individuals who have disabilities”. The top left picture depicts a black and gray wheelchair. The back wheels are double the size of the front wheels, but both are very thick and sturdy. The entire frame and cushions are black, and the seat of the wheelchair is tilted back about 30 degrees. Theoretical models allow members of a discipline to establish a common ground upon which to further develop inquiry, practice and reflection. Historically, models and frameworks have been developed to simplify and explain a phenomenon. Models have served science for generations. Evidence-based practice has become a paramount element of healthcare policy, funding and implementation, including rehabilitation settings.
