ABSTRACT

This chapter presents global perspectives on socially responsible actions supporting the inclusion of persons with disabilities as full and equal members in society. Information on services, systems, and policies designed to reduce impairment and increase participation will focus on the value of rehabilitation and assistive technology interventions. Disease and impairment are recognized as primary indicators for disability leading to poverty, inequality, and lack of fundamental human rights including health, social protection, education, and job opportunities that promote prosperity. The value of rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology for persons with disabilities is endorsed by international resolutions and initiatives with recommendations for effective actions. Globally sustainable actions assure that resources are and remain available. In 2010, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) launched development of the future ISO 26000 standard on social responsibility to draw on and disseminate best practices for the good of the international community.
