ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the future of wild pig management in North America, and describes some of the steps that will be required for continued reduction in wild pig populations and damages. It discusses the development of unified goals, educating the public, the need to improve our scientific knowledge, how this knowledge is necessary to inform decision-makers, and the importance of increasing resources available for wild pig management. Ultimately, the future success of wild pig management in North America will be a function of increased availability of economic resources for population management and damage mitigation efforts. Governmental investment in wild pig control has increased significantly since 2014, and at least in the short term, allocation of resources for this purpose seems secure. However, the extent to which governmental support will continue will ultimately be a function of how well policy makers are educated on the impacts of wild pigs and how efficiently progress to reduce these impacts is made.
