ABSTRACT

Urbanization or urban expansion is a long-term phenomenon driven by many socioeconomic factors like population growth, migration, infrastructural development, and so on. Urban expansion, which is believed to be caused by economic growth as one of the factors, results in various disparities, for example, in terms of fragmented growth and lack of facilities at outskirt expanded regions. Urban growth management plays a pivotal role in synchronizing the increasing urbanization with the overall development of the area. Urban growth management is an essential part of urban planning because besides causing unplanned urban expansion, rapid and haphazard urbanization leads to a disruption of ecosystem functioning also. It causes deforestation, reduced infiltration, increased soil erosion, and many other environmental problems. The advancement of remote sensing and GIS in recent decades has made it easier for researchers to carry out urban growth studies. Having a huge significance on demography and environment, urban growth and its management has been studied widely in developing as well as developed nations. A case study of Lucknow district situated in Uttar Pradesh state of India is analyzed in this chapter. The change in urban growth in the study area over the period of 2000–2017 has been characteristically examined.
