ABSTRACT

Space sustainability is a broad and emerging concept which takes into account both the needs and interests of the present generation conducting space activities, and those of future generations to come. This chapter explains the complex policy and law issues surrounding collective problems such as space debris and radiofrequency interference, and the threat of the weaponization of outer space—including the possibility of armed conflict in the space domain. The utility of international coordination, whether hard law or norms of behaviour, suggests that only through harnessing the long-term interests of states can space sustainability be fostered.
