ABSTRACT

The oral hygiene status, pathogenicity of a microorganisms, and host response influence the general oral health and overall well-being of an individual. There are various commensals present in the mouth and throat. Bacterial infections contribute to a major deal in the dental, oral, and general health of the individual. Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common diseases of the oral cavity. Culture-independent molecular techniques, site, and subject specificity of the microorganisms seem to play a major role in isolating the etiology and understanding the behavior of the bacterial infections. The oral cavity being the abode to diverse microbiota was found to influence the systemic health of the individual. Lifestyle, diet, habitat, and personal habits have been found to influence the oral microbiome. Autoimmune desquamative diseases, such as lichen planus and pemphigus vulgaris, can occur in relation to mucosa tongue and cheek.
